Viagem a Caxias do Sul

Viajei nessas férias pela quarta ou quinta vez para Caxias do Sul. A primeira foi em 2000, mas na verdade essa história começa bem antes, em 1995, quando vim morar em São Paulo, na Vila Mariana, para estudar Letras e conheci o primeiro personagem desta crônica: meu amigo Marcelo Gaúcho, que logo se tornaria quase um irmão.

Na minha primeira viagem a Caxias, o plano era passar alguns dias na casa dos pais do Marcelo e depois irmos juntos a Porto Alegre. Mas já no segundo dia, depois de uma noitada no Danúbio, onde comemos um generoso filé com aspargos e tomamos incontáveis jarras de vinho, conheci aquela que seria minha verdadeira companhia naquele verão, e que depois se tornaria minha companheira por meia década: a Carol. Por causa dessas duas pessoas me tornei um visitante assíduo de Caxias e virei um baiano mezzo paulista, mezzo gaúcho.

Caxias fica na Serra Gaúcha, perto de Gramado, Canela e Bento Gonçalves, e o que primeiro chamou minha atenção quando o ônibus se aproximava da cidade pela estrada que serpenteia por entre os morros verdes da região, foi um tipo diferente de verde, mais opaco, que se destacava na paisagem não só pelo tom, mas porque suas folhas formavam superfícies tão planas e regulares que pareciam grandes tapetes estendidos no meio da mata. Eram os parreirais — eu logo descobriria.

Como a maior parte do Sul do Brasil, a Serra Gaúcha foi povoada por alemães e principalmente por italianos. Daí que alguns de seus principais atrativos sejam os vinhos e a culinária. Qualquer restaurante mediano serve vinhos de jarra de boa qualidade a um preço muito razoável, tinto (em geral cabernet) ou branco (um delicioso moscato). Os conhecedores talvez os desprezem, mas para os meros mortais é uma ótima opção. A comida é igualmente boa, e farta! Mais uma vez, não se trata de alta gastronomia, mas da tradicionalíssima culinária italiana adaptada às condições locais e aliada ao brasileiríssimo churrasco, arte em que os gaúchos são imbatíveis. Outra marca registrada são as galeterias, como a Vindima, que servem galeto temperado com sálvia e preparado na brasa, acompanhado de espaguete, polenta frita, radicci (uma folha verde) e salada de batatas. Você paga um preço fixo e come até cansar.

De churrascaria, indico a Imperador, mas a melhor carne que comi por lá não foi em restaurante. Fui uma vez a pé com o Marcelo e alguns amigos até a chácara dos pais dele. Uma caminhada de mais de três horas debaixo do sol por estradinhas de terra no meio dos parreirais — quando a sede batia, era só esticar o braço e roubar um bom cacho de uvas frescas, que na época felizmente já estavam maduras. Chegamos lá a tempo de ver o sol se pôr, e pouco depois o pai dele chegava trazendo as carnes e a cerveja gelada. Eles não iam lá fazia tempo, a casa estava sem luz elétrica. Fizemos o churrasco no escuro e comemos com as mãos: aquela costela estava tão saborosa que lembro que tive medo de comer os meus próprios dedos.

Por fim, não deixe de tomar a sopa de cappeletti. Da beleza das mulheres não vou falar. Poderia soar indelicado e, de resto, todo mundo conhece a fama das gaúchas. Só vou dizer uma coisa: ela é justa. Além disso, acontece que essa viagem marcou também o fim do meu namoro de cinco anos, por isso é provável que eu não volte para lá tão cedo. Mas um dia hei de voltar!
