No dia 3 deste mês, a Vila Mariana completou 125 anos de história. E embora o nome do bairro tenha sido registrado por Carlos Petit, no dia 8 de janeiro de 1896, em um cartório da Rua Vergueiro, o distrito de Vila Mariana só foi reconhecido pela Câmara de Vereadores em 1907. Nesta edição, o Pedaço da Vila traz a história de duas figuras importantes para o desenvolvimento urbano e social do bairro: Alberto Kuhlmann e Carlos Petit. E ainda uma conversa com a bisneta, Gláucia Kuhlmann, que esclareceu um erro histórico sobre a origem do nome do bairro  

Os primeiros registros da história da Vila Mariana datam dos mapas de 1770. Denominada Meio Caminho do Carro, era passagem do Caminho do Mar, que ligava São Vicente à Vila de Piratininga.    Os primeiros moradores se estabeleceram no então Mato Grosso, próximo à região da Caixa D’água. Um campo cheio de pitangueiras foi escolhido para ser o ponto de parada, que hoje compreende as ruas Vergueiro com França Pinto e Madre Cabrini. Denominado Rancho dos Tropeiros, era parada obrigatória para os animais e viajantes descansarem e se abastecerem. O local foi se desenvolvendo e, no início do século 19, ficou conhecido como Cruz das Almas, devido às cruzes fixadas pela estrada como sinal da morte de tropeiros, vítimas de ladrões.  

No 2º Império, a partir de 1840, a Estrada do Mar, que posteriormente foi renomeada Estrada Vergueiro, torna-se fundamental para o desenvolvimento da cidade, e a futura Vila abre espaço para novas famílias: sítios são delimitados e ruas são abertas.    O imperador D. Pedro II, com a intenção de produzir alimentos para abastecer os moradores que se instalavam no entorno do Meio Caminho do Carro, concedeu lotes de terras para famílias italianas. Na época, o bairro também ficou conhecido como Colônia.   

Um marco cardeal, na Rua França Pinto, esquina com a Domingos de Morais, chamado Marco de Meia Légua, ainda resiste ao tempo e indica, em suas quatro faces, a distância, em léguas, para norte, sul, leste e oeste: São Paulo, Pinheiros, Santo Amaro e Santana.   O bairro só passou a se chamar Vila Mariana depois que duas personalidades vieram morar à margem da Rua Vergueiro: o engenheiro Alberto Kuhlmann e o bem-nascido político Carlos Petit.  

Alberto Kuhlmann O alemão Georg Albrecht Hermann Kuhlmann nasceu em Bremerhaven. Chegou ao Brasil aos 15 anos, naturalizou-se brasileiro e formou-se pela Escola Politécnica do Rio de Janeiro. Trabalhando para o império, na área de planejamento urbano desde 1877, mudou-se para São Paulo em 1879 com a incumbência de construir a Ferrovia de Santo Amaro. Estabeleceu-se na Vila Mariana, pois sua família tinha uma imensa fazenda na região.

Em 1883 iniciou a construção da linha da Companhia Carris de Ferro da Capital, que ligaria São Paulo a Santo Amaro, em 1886.   Homem muito influente, Kuhlmann foi jornalista do jornal O Estado de S. Paulo e deputado estadual para a primeira Assembleia Constituinte Paulista. Foi ele que projetou e construiu o Matadouro Municipal, em 1887 — hoje sede da Cinemateca Brasileira.   Dizem que o nome Vila Mariana é uma homenagem à sua esposa Marianna, fato que apuramos não ser verdadeiro, pois ela se chamava Josephina.  

Carlos Petit Carlos Eduardo de Paula Petit era um homem influente e de boa família; o pai era francês e a mãe portuguesa. Foi tenente-coronel da Guarda Civil, delegado, juiz de paz e vereador da cidade por duas vezes. Sua última ocupação foi como administrador do cemitério da Vila Mariana.   Petit trouxe sua esposa Maria (mais conhecida como dona Mariquinha) e sua mãe, Ana, da nobre região da Consolação para morar na periferia da cidade, onde construiu uma casa na rua que hoje leva seu nome. Era o homem mais importante da Vila Mariana na época.  

Parte da história registra que Petit, para homenagear a esposa, Maria, e a mãe, Ana, formou o nome Vila Mariana e o registrou no dia 8 de janeiro de 1896 em um cartório da Rua Vergueiro. O distrito Vila Mariana foi reconhecido pela Câmara dos Vereadores anos depois, no dia 3 de setembro de 1907.   Com Petit como vereador, o bairro recebeu inúmeras melhorias. Sua esposa foi a primeira professora do bairro, ensinando as crianças pobres das redondezas. Ele morreu em 1922, aos 58 anos.  

A bisneta de Albert Kuhlmann, Gláucia Kuhlmann Chohfi, trouxe informações preciosas para completarmos essa história. Ela informa que a família Kuhlman já estava no Brasil bem antes de o bisavô chegar ao Rio de Janeiro. “Era uma família de botânicos e vieram para o Brasil estudar sua riquíssima flora”, conta.  

Segundo ela, uma prima de Kuhlmann, que se chamava Marianne, tinha uma imensa fazenda que começava na altura da hoje Rua Vergueiro e descia até as proximidades do Parque Ibirapuera. Com o processo de urbanização da cidade, ela loteou suas terras e ficou apenas com uma chácara. Muito conhecida no bairro, era chamada de Donna Marianna pelos vizinhos brasileiros e, por isso, colocou uma placa no portão da chácara, onde se lia: Villa Marianna. “A placa servia de referência, pois não havia ruas com nomes, era um marco aqui outro ali que determinava as localizações da cidade.”  

Gláucia diz que Petit utilizou-se dessa referência para registrar o nome do bairro. “Acredito que ele aproveitou que a chácara de Marianne era muito conhecida como ponto de referência na região para dar o nome ao bairro. E ainda fez uma homenagem à esposa e à mãe. Afinal, ele precisou convencê-las a sair de um bairro já estruturado para outro em desenvolvimento”, observa.  

A neta de Kulhmann, que sempre morou na região, conta que a bisavó Josephina sabia o quanto Albert Kulhmann amava este bairro. “Meu bisavô faleceu, em 1905, na Alemanha, durante uma missão oficial do governo brasileiro para fortalecer o intercâmbio cultural teuto-brasileiro, e fazer propaganda do café paulista naquele país. Seu corpo foi enterrado em sua cidade natal, Bremerhaven. Conta a lenda familiar que minha bisavó fez um travesseirinho, com terra do Brasil, para ser colocado no túmulo dele, mais especificamente a terra da Villa Marianna”, esclarece.
