A diferença entre ambos é que no Mat Pilates os exercícios são todos realizados no solo (mat = tapete), não havendo o uso de equipamentos de estúdio, somente de acessórios não-obrigatórios (como o próprio tapete, bolas, o círculo mágico e os rolos), além do peso do próprio corpo e da gravidade.  

O Mat Pilates é capaz de proporcionar o aumento da consciência corporal, força, alongamento e equilíbrio. Com a técnica, os músculos são duplamente ativados, sendo tonificados e alongados ao mesmo tempo. As aulas tem duração média de 45 a 60 minutos e devem ser realizadas pelo menos duas vezes por semana para se obter bons resultados.

O exercício é indicado para todos, cabendo ressaltar a necessidade de recomendação médica para gestantes e idosos. Além disso, não é necessário ter previamente um bom histórico de preparo físico, pois é possível começar com os exercícios mais fáceis e evoluir com o tempo de prática e dedicação.
