No Coração do Brasil
Quando estava na pré-produção do documentário “Vila Mariana – de Colônia à República da Vila”, surgiu a possibilidade de documentarmos uma nova expedição ao CGB – Centro Geográfico do Brasil.
Os irmãos Cláudio e Orlando Villas Bôas, funcionários da Fundação Brasil Central, comandaram, em 1958, a primeira expedição, em companhia de Sérgio Vahia, filho do Dr. Delcídio Vahia, médico da expedição Roncador-Xingu; Adrian Cowell, estudante de cinema da universidade de Cambridge, que se integrou à expedição por indicação do antropólogo Darcy Ribeiro; e o futuro cacique Raoni, na época com 23 anos e o professor de português de Cowell.
A proposta do novo documentário era promover o reencontro no coração do Brasil, 50 anos depois, dos três sobreviventes à expedição: Sérgio Vahia, cacique Raoni e Adrian Cowell.
No mês de setembro de 2008, tentei demover Sérgio Vahia de fazer a expedição naquele ano, porque não havia tempo hábil para viabilizar a captação de recursos para a execução do documentário e para a empreitada que consistia, entre outras providências, em conseguir, junto à FUNAI e às nações indígenas, autorização para atravessar os territórios dos índios ao longo dos rios Kuluene e Xingu.
Lutando contra um câncer, Sérgio Vahia, 80 anos, estava determinado a fazer a expedição, entre setembro e outubro de 2008, por dois motivos: primeiro porque seu médico recomendou-lhe que, caso quisesse fazer uma viagem de 1800 km e uma caminhada de 18,5 km na mata, ele teria que fazê-las imediatamente; segundo, devido à data: 14 de outubro de 2008. Ele queria estar lá nesta data.
Deixei a pesquisa e o roteiro do documentário Vila Mariana encaminhados e embarquei para Alta Floresta; de lá, viajei de ônibus até Colider (MT) para encontrar Raoni Metuktire, um dos índios mais conhecidos no Brasil e no exterior por sua campanha em defesa dos povos indígenas e da Floresta Amazônica. Raoni estava em uma casa pertencente à FUNAI e, já na entrada, dois índios me pediram dinheiro para a compra da farinha, para que o cacique fizesse a sua refeição. Conversamos acompanhados de seu sobrinho, Megaron, que foi o meu facilitador para o contato. Raoni confirmou o encontro com Sérgio Vahia e Adrian Cowell no Centro Geográfico do Brasil; pedi a ele que assinasse uma autorização formal para eu poder filmá-lo durante a expedição. Ele aceitou.
De volta a Alta Floresta, embarquei num voo para Goiânia que fazia escala em São Paulo – ou seja, eu já estava no Centro-Oeste, meu destino era Goiânia e fui obrigado a passar por SP novamente!
Sérgio já ultimava os preparativos da expedição em Goiânia: barcos, motores, mochilas e um elevado número de presentes para os índios: linha de pesca, tecidos, facas, panelas, lanternas… Cada tribo no roteiro da expedição receberia uma lembrança dos caraíbas visitantes.
A nova expedição partiu de Goiânia no dia 20 de setembro de 2008. Passamos por Aragarças, Barra do
Garças, Xavantina e Canarana; depois viajamos em canoas por seis dias nos rios Kuluene e Xingu,
sentido norte. Próximo a São José do Xingu, encontramos o cacique Raoni e Bdjai, seu sobrinho, que arregimentou os índios que abririam a picada até nosso destino.
Montamos acampamento na margem esquerda do rio Xingu e ali aguardamos a chegada de Adrian Cowell, que partiu de Londres no dia 14 de outubro. A picada foi feita em uma semana, seguindo as coordenadas do Centro: latitude 10 graus e 20 minutos ao sul do Equador e 53 graus e 12 minutos a oeste de Greenwich.
O Centro Geográfico do Brasil está localizado no Médio Xingu, na reserva do Parque Indígena do Xingu, no nordeste do Estado de Mato Grosso – MT, na porção sul da Amazônia Brasileira. O coração do Brasil encontra-se na mais importante reserva indígena das Américas – que segue habitada e protegida pelos caiapós-txucarramaes, liderados pelo cacique Raoni.
Todo o grupo atingiu o CGB em 21 de outubro, início da estação das águas na região. Sérgio Vahia fez o percurso em seis dias; os índios prepararam acampamentos improvisados ao longo da picada para facilitar sua caminhada.
Uma cerimônia simples foi realizada no dia da remarcação: a bandeira brasileira foi hasteada enquanto os caiapós entoavam um cântico de guerra.
Durante três semanas, convivi com índios das mais diversas etnias no alto e médio Xingu. Passamos pelos seguintes postos indígenas: Kuluene (Vanité, Kalapalo), Diauarum (Moiópi, Kayabi) Wawi (Kamani, Suiá), Pavuru (Kumaré, Txicão) e Leonardo (Kokoti). Com uma única exceção, sempre fomos recebidos com hospitalidade e alegria pelas comunidades.
Sérgio Vahia já era esperado pelos chefes e as conversas giravam em torno das lembranças do tempo em que ele, sozinho, visitava as aldeias e fazia amigos. Foram momentos de grande emoção; cada encontro dava lugar às memórias e às lembranças que evocavam os antepassados que se foram.
O indígena que habita as margens dos rios Kuluene e Xingu sempre está atento aos barcos que por ali navegam: sabe distinguir quando são convidados ou invasores. O sistema de rádio nas aldeias funciona perfeitamente. Em Diauarum, pudemos usar a internet via satélite.
A população indígena cresceu muito e rapidamente nos limites do Parque Indígena do Xingu (PIX). Os jovens e as crianças se multiplicaram depois que a assistência médica se tornou mais presente.
Durante a estada nos acampamentos e mesmo nas caminhadas pela mata, quando os ouvidos são mais exigidos do que a visão, pudemos apreciar a natureza em toda a sua plenitude. A exuberância da fauna e da flora na região do Parque do Xingu resiste às tentativas de queimadas e de exploração ilegal das riquezas naturais. A luta pela preservação é diária e mobiliza toda a comunidade do PIX.
O filme documentário “Remarcação do Centro Geográfico do Brasil” está em fase de captação de recursos na Lei Rouanet e PROAC/ICMS da Secretaria de Estado da Cultura do Governo do Estado de São Paulo.
