Assim como na pequena cidade de Costellabate, na Itália, Santa Maria a Mare é celebrada no pedaço pelos
descendentes de italianos com uma grande festa no terceiro domingo do mês de agosto 

Bem longe de Vila Mariana, no ano de 1897, na província de Salermo, Região da Campagna, Itália, mais precisamente no litoral de Santa Maria Castellabate,uma embarcação cargueira foi castigada por enormes ondas e jogada contra as pedras. Seus tripulantes, pescadores humildes, desesperados, invocaram socorro perante a imagem de Nossa Senhora do Mar que protegia a embarcação.

No mesmo instante, um clarão surgiu e ondas desencalharam o barco, levando-o em direção ao banco de areia. Milagrosamente, todos foram salvos e, em agradecimento, os fiéis construíram uma capela em homenagem à santa, consagrando-a protetora dos navegantes e promoveram uma festa da Assunção de Nossa Senhora, que se tornou tradição na Itália, onde sua imagem é conduzida pelas ruas da cidade, numa procissão acompanhada por devotos vindos de todo mundo. Quinze anos depois do milagre, Amato Costabile saiu da pequena Castellabate para tentar a vida no Brasil. Como muitos outros italianos, instalou-se na Vila Mariana, na rua França Pinto, ao lado da capela Santo Inácio de Loiola.

“Era uma pequena casa onde o padre Romano Gori celebrava as missas”, recorda o seu neto, Nicolino Costabile Amato Pierro, 63 anos. Sr. Costabile, que trabalhava como construtor, casou-se com Josefina e, em 1920, começou a construir duas casas na rua Humberto I (nos921/923) – a sua e do cunhado Luiz Salzano, que trabalhava no Matadouro. As casas ficaram prontas em 1924: “As pessoas vinham de fora para ver o projeto de meu avô e copiar o modelo”, conta Nicola (como é conhecido Nicolino). A família cresceu e o sr. Costabile prosperou, construindo casas por toda cidade.

Só parou em measos da década de 30, devido a um problema na coluna. “Ele foi levado às pressas para o hospital e lá, inexplicavelmente, entrou em coma e foi desenganado pelo médicos. “Minha avó conta que, depois de 10 horas desacordado, ele despertou e disse que a santa esteve ao seu lado todo o tempo, salvando-o da morte”. Com a graça recebi da, o sr. Costabille saiu do hospital decidido a mandar fazer a imagem da santa, exatamente como a de sua cidade natal. Encomendou-a ao artista e amigo Gilormo Ipólito que demorou dois anos para reproduzi-la em gesso.

“Em 1941, a imagem ficou pronta e, no ano seguinte, no dia 15 de agosto,como na Itália, saiu a primeira procissão, seguida por todas as famílias italianas do bairro”. Mas era necessária uma igreja para abrigar a imagem e o sr. Costabille e padre Romano uniram-se para angariar recursos para a construção da igreja. O terreno, na rua França Pinto, 115, foi doado por Júlio Eça e recursos para sua construção levantados pela comunidade. O então senador André Matarazzo – também natural de Castellabate – doou o altar-mór especialmente para a imagem de Nossa Senhora do Mar.

A festa, a cada ano maior, mobilizava a comunidade. Começava às 10h com uma Missa Solene e a procissão saía às 16h. A imagem da santa – de 150 quilos – era conduzida pelas ruas do bairro à semelhança das comemorações que se faz na Itália: “Era tudo planejado para a procissão acabar no cair da noite para queima dos fogos”.

Em seguida, todos iam para a quermesse na rua Major Maragliano comer macarronada e beber vinho . “Cada família tinha sua barraca. Lembro-me de que a italianada brigava feio… Era uma grande festa!”. Foram 25 anos de comemorações. Com o golpe militar, em 1964, a procissão deixou de sair. ”A festa começou a ser realizada dentro da igreja”. Mas aos poucos, Padre Romano foi retomando a procissão. Num ano a imagem foi para o pátio da igreja, depois, foi às ruas. Nos anos 80, Padre Romano, já idoso, recolheu-se.

O feriado, dia 15 de agosto em comemoração à Assunção de Nossa Senhora, deixou de existir. A cidade cresceu, restringindo ruas e escondendo as tradições. O que não mudou foi o espírito de devoção do sr. Costabile, falecido em 1951, que continuou perpetuado por seus netos, bisnetos e tataranetos:“A comissão organizadora são os Amato, Salsano, Hipólito, Pierro, Pasquale, Di Mauro…”, entre outras famílias da Vila Mariana. “Enquanto eu estiver vivo, promoverei a festa”, promete Nicola. Hoje não há mais quermesse e a festa, comemorada no 3º domingo do mês de agosto, percorre somente as ruas Major Maragliano, Humberto I e França Pinto”. Contudo, os devotos continuam a consagrar a santa com a mesma devoção e tradição: “Toda a comunidade está convidada”, chama Nicola.
