Chaker Assad (1884-1976) nasceu em Homs, na Síria, e chegou a São Paulo no final do século 19 com esperanças de fazer sua vida ao lado do irmão mais velho, Antonio, que já morava no Brasil. “Eram pessoas muito simples. Chegaram aqui ‘com uma mão na frente e outra atrás’, após uma cansativa viagem de navio”, conta o neto Gilberto Assad, morador da rua Capitão Cavalcanti. “Eles vinham com a idéia de melhorar de vida, ‘fazer a América’, como se dizia naquela época”.
Quando chegou, foi viver no bairro da Liberdade com alguns parentes, trabalhando como mascate: “Todos os imigrantes árabes iniciaram seu comércio dessa maneira”, explica Gilberto.
Com pouco mais de 20 anos, Chaker foi pressionado pela família a se casar. “E, como era costume naquela época, ‘importaram’ minha avó da Síria para casar com ele”, conta o neto. O casamento foi celebrado uma semana depois da chegada de Tamine, uma mulher forte e bem prendada que participou ativamente dos negócios do marido. “Minha avó era costureira e confeccionava toalhas, aventais, bordados e vestidos para meu avô vender”.
Chaker enchia sua mala com aqueles produtos e saia em viagens de trem pelo interior de São Paulo. “Meu avô ficava fora durante um mês e voltava com o dinheiro, que investia em mais produção”.
E assim fez seu pé-de-meia, economizando o que podia: “Usava o dinheiro que ganhava apenas para comer. O resto guardava embaixo do colchão”, revela Gilberto.
Com a economia, Chaker montou sua primeira loja de tecidos na rua Vergueiro, junto ao antigo Largo Guanabara, quase em frente à saudosa fábrica da Brahma. Alguns anos depois comprou um terreno na rua Domingos de Morais, 1.152 (ao lado da Kalunga), e construiu seu primeiro prédio, para onde levou sua loja, alugando o resto do imóvel. “Onde hoje está sendo demolido para a construção de uma igreja”, acrescenta.
Com o dinheiro do novo negócio, comprou outro terreno na mesma Domingos de Morais, na esquina com a rua Capitão Cavalcanti: “Ao lado de uma belíssima casa da família Ribeiro Branco, que tinha mais de 4 mil m2”, recorda Gilberto. Ali construiu outro prédio e uma casa para morar- as obras terminaram em 1932. Na esquina inaugurou uma loja de sapatos “Casa Flora”, em homenagem a sua filha, Florinda, falecida com apenas 28 anos de idade em 1939. Em 1941, Chaker ainda amargou a morte de seu primogênito, Frederico, fatos que enlutaram por muito tempo a família. “Meu pai, Américo, pretendia estudar Direito, mas com a morte de seus irmãos desistiu da idéia e ficou trabalhando na loja com seu pai”, ressalta Gilberto.
Pai e filho cuidavam da loja e acompanhavam a construção de mais um prédio de três andares, em outro terreno comprado na rua Domingos de Morais. Tudo o que ganhavam investiam na construção. “Depois, com 60 anos, meu pai vendeu o imóvel ao lado da Kalunga e duas casas que possuía na rua Sud Menucci e construiu um novo prédio de quatro andares, também na rua Domingos de Morais. Ele dedicou sua vida ao trabalho”.
A majestosa casa na rua Capitão Cavalcanti era o cenário preferido do avô na hora de posar para as fotos com os filhos e netos. “Ele se orgulhava ao sentar-se nos degraus da casa com a família. Sentia-se realizado!”, diz Gilberto.
Chaker trabalhou até se aposentar na tradicional Casa Flora. Passou o ponto, mas o imóvel continua da família. Morreu aos 92 anos, já viúvo, sentado em sua cadeira predileta na mesma casa da rua Capitão Cavalcanti –que foi preservada e alugada recentemente para uma escola de cinema 3D.
Chaker e Tamine, que tiveram três filhos, mas perderam dois ainda jovens, deixaram a continuação de sua história para o filho Américo, falecido em 1992, para os quatro netos e os nove bisnetos.
O paulistano Gilberto, terceira geração do sírio Chaker Assad, tem muitos motivos para amar a Vila Mariana. Aqui sua família escolheu para construir uma história – tanto o avô quanto o pai eternizaram seus nomes nos edifícios construídos. “Eles merecem. Afinal, foi o trabalho de duas vidas”, destaca.
