A família Fagundes

De acordo com o mapa de 1874, Alfredo Fagundes era dono de quase toda Vila Mariana. A chácara ia da Liberdade à Vila Clementino. Quem nos conta essa história é seu tataraneto, Dr. Ulysses Fagundes Neto, que  vive até hoje no bairro

Dr. Ulysses Fagundes Neto, 75 anos, é de uma família que era dona de quase toda Vila Mariana. Segundo mapas da cidade de São Paulo de 1800-1874, era a proprietária de uma Chácara que ia da Liberdade à Vila Clementino. “O mapa mostra que a Chácara Fagundes chegava ao Largo da Glória”, observa o médico.

A história da família Fagundes começa a ser contada por Dr. Ulysses a partir de 1827, quando sua tataravó alemã Júlia Izabel chegou ao Brasil com seus 10 filhos. “Não sabemos se o marido dela morreu na Alemanha ou durante a viagem”, observa. No Brasil, uma das filhas de sua tataravó, Lúcia Izabel, conheceu Alfredo Fagundes, um português muito bem de vida que trabalhava como tropeiro, levando e trazendo o gado da região Sul. 

Os bisavós tiveram 9 filhos e foram vendendo aos poucos os terrenos da imensa chácara para se manterem. “Pelo que eu sei, meu bisavô viveu de renda”. A vida deles era tão boa que há uma história na família que conta que o casal se divertia ao escutar os ratos roendo o dinheiro que eles guardavam em cima do guarda-roupas!”, diverte-se. 

Mas, foi o filho caçula, o tio-avô de nome Arthur, que aproveitou bem o dinheiro dos bisavós. “Tio Arthur causava muitas encrencas e gostava de viver nas farras. Ele sempre pedia à mãe para vender mais um terreno para pagar uma dívida e continuar a aproveitar a vida boêmia. Quando os pais negavam, ele dizia que ia se matar. E minha bisavó concordava”, conta. “Era o filho mais mimado e nunca trabalhou na vida”.

Já o seu avô Ulysses, coronel da Força Pública, formou-se em Medicina no Rio de Janeiro, em 1913 — na época, não havia faculdade de Medicina em São Paulo. “Casou-se com minha avó Juventina e se aposentou cedo. Sua vida era cuidar dos netos; foi a pessoa mais importante da minha vida”, confessa. Foi o avô Ulysses que encomendou os casarões projetados na colina da Av. Conselheiro Rodrigues Alves (nos 1.239 e 1.247), em frente ao Instituto Biológico, que também começava a ser construído em 1927. “Ele deu uma casa para meu pai e a outra para minha tia”. 

O projeto foi assinado por dois arquitetos italianos, os irmãos Rossi. “Eles trabalhavam no escritório de Ramos de Azevedo e fizeram ‘um bico’ construindo as quatro casas iguais, duas de meu avô”. O pai de Dr. Ulysses, Ulysses Fagundes Filho, era advogado e a mãe trabalhava como tesoureira do Instituto Biológico, até se aposentar em 1960. “A gente gritava de casa e ela aparecia na janela! Meu avô, médico, atendia de graça aos funcionários da instituição. Meu quintal era o Instituto Biológico!”.

O nosso entrevistado, que foi reitor da Unifesp de 2003 a 2008, nasceu, cresceu e mais tarde viveu com a mulher e os 4 filhos na bela casa construída pelo avô. São muitas as suas lembranças de uma Vila Mariana mais gentil. “Jogávamos futebol na Rua Morgado de Mateus e nos campos onde hoje está o Clube Círculo Militar e a Rua São Paulino. Na região havia muitos campos de futebol. Quando o movimento de carros da Rua Morgado de Mateus aumentou, passamos a jogar bola na Rua Alice de Castro, em frente de onde hoje é um hostel — era uma das casas de minha tia que ela sempre alugava”.

Ele lembra que a primeira rua asfaltada no pedaço foi a Uruana. “Eram as ruas mais novas do bairro de um novo loteamento. [o último do pedaço] Para nós foi uma festa, pois era ali que andávamos de carrinho de rolimã”.Ele também se recorda do bonde que passava em frente à sua casa e seguia para Santo Amaro — por onde hoje é a Av. Ibirapuera. “Esse bonde era fechado, um vagão enorme, e havia um outro, todo aberto, que passava pelo Matadouro e ia até Vila Madalena”.

Dr. Ulysses mostra as jabuticabeiras da casa onde hoje está sua clínica. “Uma já existia e a outra plantei aos 12 anos com meu avô. Lembro do dia em que, ao lado da jabuticabeira, ele me fez prometer que, quando eu tivesse um filho, colocaria também o nome dele de Ulysses. Sem ter ainda a noção de tempo, falei para ele que isso causaria a maior confusão, e ele me disse: `Isso não vai acontecer, pois até lá, já morri`. Dei ao meu filho o nome de Ulysses Fagundes, como chamava meu avô”.

Dr. Ulysses, o neto, viveu com a esposa e os 4 filhos em uma das duas casas até ela falecer, há 15 anos. “Foi quando mudei para um apartamento na Rua Morgado de Mateus. A casa, que abrigou 3 gerações da família Fagundes, foi matéria da Revista Cláudia em abril de 1997, por sua beleza e preservação. Ela ainda guarda os vitrais coloridos, os afrescos na parede e ladrilhos hidráulicos da época. 

A única coisa que mudou com a reforma, que durou 2 anos, foi o jardim, aterrado para acompanhar o nível da casa e o muro baixo com grades decorativas que foi substituído por muros altos. “Mas, sem atrapalhar a vista do Instituto Biológico!”, ressalta o médico.
