Convidamos o contrabaixista Sabá para enriquecer a entrevista com o integrante do grupo vocal MPB4. O encontro, que aconteceu no Barxarél, trouxe à tona a época mais efervecente da música popular brasileira, em que grandes cantores e compositores chegavam à cidade de São Paulo com o sonho de se apresentar no programa “Fino da Fossa”, na TV Record. Neste bate-papo descontraído, conheça um pouco mais sobre esta e outras histórias de dois notáveis músicos, que também são apaixonados pela Vila Mariana!
Sabá:O início de minha carreira já faz um tempinho, lá pela década de 40, 50… E a do MPB4?
Aquiles: Mais para frente, lá pela década de 60. A gente era fã absoluto de “Os Cariocas”, também do “Tamba Trio” e “Os Farroupilhas”. Como grupo vocal éramos encantados com abertura das vozes, com as harmonias e as harmonizações, aquelas coisas moderníssimas que tinham na época. A gente morava em Niterói e era nosso espelho justamente esse pessoal que fazia música vocal no início dos anos 60. Até que no início de 62, mais ou menos, também nos profissionalizamos.
Sabá:Você já estava nesse primeiro grupo?
Aquiles: Já… Era um grupo de estudantes lá em Niterói que fazia política universitária, chamava-se Centro Popular de Cultura e era ligado à UNE. Começamos como um grupo de teatro, fazendo apresentações em praça pública, sindicatos, em porta de fábrica… A gente começou com esse grupo que fazia política através da arte. Foi assim até 64, quando em abril houve o golpe militar e evidentemente junto com o movimento estudantil, os CPCs foram extintos. A gente se chamava na época “Quarteto do CPC”. Quando ocorreu o golpe, ficamos com esse quarteto meio sem saber o que fazer. Até que em julho de 65 resolvemos, numas férias escolares, sair de Niterói e vir para São Paulo, com um objetivo meio maluco de tentar cantar no programa “Fino da Bossa”. Na época era o que tinha de mais extraordinário em matéria de música. Viemos para cá para ficar até o final do mês, quando voltaríamos a Niterói para continuarmos nossos estudos e atividades. Só que, ao chegar em São Paulo, a gente conheceu um cara que foi marcante na nossa carreira, o Chico de Assis, ligado ao teatro, à música, à televisão. Ele nos acompanhou nesse início e nos apresentou ao Chico Buarque, nos juntou ao Quarteto em Cy, preparou o pout-porri de sambas antigos. Ele nos levou até os bastidores do teatro Record e nos apresentou aos dois diretores do “Fino da Bossa”, o Manoel Carlos, hoje o autor de novela da TV Globo e o Nilton Travesso. Eles se encantaram com as apresentações dos dois quartetos vocálicos e nos programaram para o programa daquela noite. Pouca gente sabe disso, mas na época o “Fino da Bossa” era dividido em duas partes: uma só para o público que estava no teatro e a outra: que era gravada em vídeo tape e levada à televisão. Então as pessoas novas, como a gente, normalmente eram encaixadas pelos diretores na primeira parte, até para testar o público. Só que eles nos colocaram logo na primeira parte que foi gravada, a gente cantou nessa mesma noite esse número longo, com sete minutos de duração e terminamos cantando Elis Regina. Imagine, os moleques caipiras lá de Niterói que chegaram aqui achando que iam cantar no “Fino da Bossa” e, em uma semana, conseguindo! Aí no decorrer dessas férias de julho, aparecemos em todos os programas musicais da Record – na época tinham vários, fizemos também o programa da Hebe Camargo, que na época era da TV Tupi. Em menos de 20 dias, um empresário chamado Moracy Duval já estava querendo nos empresariar. Chamou a gente num canto: “Olha, essa conversa de que não pode marcar nada para depois de julho, que vocês têm que voltar pra Niterói… Ou vocês embarcam nessa ou a gente pára por aqui e vocês voltam para casa com o troféu do ‘Fino da Bossa’…” O grupo ficou então com essa doce encruzilhada para resolver. Na época, morávamos no hotel Normandi, um grande hotel na época, por conta da Record. Passamos uma noite tomando cerveja no botequim que tinha na outra esquina, em frente ao hotel, decidindo se a gente tinha coragem de peitar esse desafio… Isso foi em 1965! Aí decidimos: ir para Niterói sim, mas para comunicar às famílias que íamos largar aquele troço todo lá e voltar para São Paulo. O que a gente queria era cantar!
P.daVila: Qual era a sua idade?
Aquiles: Eu tinha 17 anos…Na época meu pai precisou dar um documento para o Rui, que era o mais velho do grupo. Era ele quem representava o meu pai para eu poder entrar nos lugares.
Sabá: Todos são do Rio de Janeiro?
Aquiles: Nascido em Niterói, só eu. Os outros são do interior do estado do Rio. Há dois anos, o Rui saiu e entrou o compositor Dalmo Medeiros que é também um cara ligado ao vocal, participou do “Céu da Boca”.
Sabá:Dá uma saudade imensa…
Aquiles: Ah, aquela geração… Naquele momento calhou de estar aparecendo ao mesmo tempo uma geração fantástica de compositores e intérpretes e um pessoal da música instrumental. Uma coincidência muito grande… Nós músicos vivenciamos uma coisa privilegiada que foi estarmos todos surgindo ao mesmo tempo. Eu sempre digo que isso é uma coisa muito difícil de acontecer, porque naquele momento ainda existia uma televisão voltada para a música, como era a TV Record. É bom que se frise que falo da TV Record do Paulo Machado de Carvalho e não da de hoje, do Bispo Macedo. Não tenho nada contra, mas naquele momento tinha tudo a favor, porque a TV Record tratava a música com o respeito que ela merece. Hoje em dia, infelizmente, a televisão não dá à música a mesma dignidade e importância daquela época. Todos surgiram naquele momento, cada um vindo de um lugar, Caetano, Gil, Chico Buarque (que já morava aqui em São Paulo), o Baden Powell, a Elis Regina, que vinha do Rio Grande do Sul, o Jair Rodrigues e nós. Era uma geração de músicos extremamente competentes que surgiram no momento em que a televisão abria as portas e botava esse povo lá dentro para o público conhecer. Então essa felicidade de momento dificilmente surgirá de novo.
Pedaço da Vila:Como você vê a MPB de hoje comparada com a do passado?
Aquiles: Naquela época o grande talento logo estava na boca do povo. Hoje em dia, um cara bom leva 15, 20 anos se conseguir vir a fazer sucesso. O Lenini, o Chico César, o Zeca Baleiro quando estouraram já eram veteranos. Se falava da nova geração que está surgindo… Eu conheço o Lenini há 20 anos e ele sempre fez essa música maravilhosa, só que não há espaço pra esse tipo de música. Até hoje o Celso Viáfora, que é nosso amigo e grande compositor, o próprio Vicente Barreto, não recebeu o reconhecimento do grande público porque não têm onde aparecer.
Sabá: Eu cheguei a largar tudo para pertencer a um grupo que acompanhava artista famoso. Primeiro foi com Elis Regina e uma fase longa com o Wilson Simonal. E vocês?
Aquiles:Não, a gente teve um tempo no início da carreira que cantou muito com Chico Buarque, mas nunca deixamos de ter a nossa carreira paralela. O Chico não fazia show que não fosse com a gente. Tínhamos nossa agenda e a agenda com o Chico. No programas da Record, alguns diziam “Pô, será que não dava para vocês fazerem um coro pro fulano?”. E a gente aceitava desde que pudéssemos cantar uma música, sozinhos.
P.daVila: E a busca pelo repertório?
Aquiles: Naquela época o compositor compunha e dava para o intérprete cantar. Agora o compositor compõe para ele próprio cantar. Então você hoje vai pedir uma música para o Chico Buarque, ele diz: “As poucas músicas que eu fiz vou gravar no meu disco”. Você pede uma música pro Caetano, ele diz: “Pô, não… Eu estou preparando meu disco que vou lançar daqui seis anos”… Então, agora você tem um repertório muito bom, muito variado, das pessoas mais novas que não param de surgir. Mas, hoje em dia, você enfrenta uma outra barreira que é da dificuldade de convencer uma gravadora de que deve gravar um disco com músicas inéditas. As gravadoras tiram a fórmula de que “música inédita não interessa”. Por isso essa proliferação muito saudável dos pequenos selos de gravação. Atualmente, com a tecnologia, um bom programa de computador, você grava um disco em casa com um quarto cheio de travesseiro, cobertor pendurado na parede pra amortecer o som. Assim você é capaz de fazer um bom disco. Porque se depender das grandes gravadoras, você acaba não lançando. Era para termos lançado nosso DVD no ano passado. Só que não encontramos gravadora, então resolvemos fazer num esquema quase independente. Quando já estávamos na semana de gravar o show, que a gente já tinha um esquema mais ou menos armado, quase em cooperativa, surgiu uma grande gravadora que se interessou em pegar o projeto. Por quê? Porque tem poucas músicas inéditas… No DVD a gente faz um apanhado da nossa carreira, então isso interessa. O público acaba ficando feliz… É um número redondo, 40 anos. O cara compra para ver um retrospecto de sua vida. A gente aproveitou para fazer uma coisa que está se fazendo muito agora, convidar músicos conhecidos. Então nosso DVD tem participações importantíssimas, desde do próprio Chico Buarque, o Quarteto em Cy, o Cauby Peixoto, o Milton Nascimento, o Zeca Pagodinho e uma cantora nova para quem temos dado apoio que é Roberta Sá, uma carioca, muito boa.
Sabá:E como veio parar na nossa Vila Mariana?
Aquiles: Pelas voltas que o mundo dá. Lá no Rio tive filhos, me separei e depois de muito tempo, me casei com uma paulista. Ela trabalha aqui, é bióloga e, por isso, não podia sair de São Paulo. E eu falei: “então saio eu”. No meu trabalho a gente não tem pouso certo, vai aonde contratam. Sair de São Paulo ou do Rio para fazer show é indiferente. Aí vim direto para Vila Mariana, além de dar aulas no Arqui, ela havia passado num concurso do Instituto Biológico. Agora parou de lecionar porque nasceu nossa filhinha Isabela que está com dois anos e dez meses. Estou aqui há treze anos, minha vida se resume à Vila Mariana. Ando muito a pé, caminho no parque… Eu pego engarrafamento quando vou ao Rio, aqui não pego: o dentista é ali, o barbeiro é ali, a banca de jornal é ali, o botequim é aqui. Minha vida é esta, não quero mais nada…
P.daVila: O MPB4 tem algum show agendado?
Aquiles: Não, estamos batalhando para fazer o show de lançamento do DVD. Já estamos calejados, se fossemos nos abater pela primeira dificuldade …
