Cidade de Pedra
São Thomé das Letras é uma cidade no Sul de Minas, há 355 km de São Paulo, que guarda mistérios e belezas naturais. A cidade conta com uma infra-estrutura até para o mais exigente turista. Restaurantes, pousadas, asfalto até a cidade, estação rodoviária. Mas o ideal é ir de carro para aproveitar o máximo das belezas, pois os passeios são distantes. À noite, o melhor é ver o céu estrelado do Cruzeiro, marco religioso localizado no Parque Antônio Rosa e de onde é possível ter uma visão de 360 graus.
São Thomé das Letras se encontra envolta em uma aura de mistérios e fenômenos inexplicáveis. Há histórias de discos voadores, muitas comunidades esotéricas e uma gruta com inscrições rupestres que deu origem ao nome da cidade e onde está construída a Igreja Matriz.
Conta a lenda que João Antão, escravo da Fazenda Campo Alegre, teve um romance com a irmã de seu senhor, João Francisco Junqueira e foi descoberto. Castigado, refugiou-se nessa gruta, que fica no alto da serra, onde passou a viver da pesca, frutos e raízes da região. Um dia um santo de vestes brancas apareceu para o escravo e lhe entregou um bilhete dizendo que, se entregasse ao capitão João Francisco, ele o perdoaria. Ao ler o bilhete, o capitão seguiu João Antão até a gruta. E foi ali que encontraram a imagem de São Tomé, entalhada em madeira. Dizem que o capitão bem que tentou levar a imagem para sua casa, mas ela sempre reaparecia na gruta. Como era um homem profundamente religioso, mandou erguer, em 1785, uma capela para abrigar a imagem milagrosa.
Antigos moradores dizem que os desenhos da entrada da gruta são sinais dos índios cataguases. Outros, palavras deixadas pelo Santo. Lá em cima, em São Thomé das Letras, tudo é possível.
