Quando foi inaugurada, em 1952, a biblioteca da Vila Mariana foi abrigada num pequeno sobrado da Rua Domingos de Morais, e tinha um acervo especializado em literatura infantil. “Ela funcionou ali por 13 anos”, conta a atual diretora da biblioteca, Sandra Machado Alves.
No dia 4 de abril de 1965, os livros foram transferidos para a nova sede, na Rua Sena Madureira 298, onde permanece. Só quatro anos mais tarde, porém, é que ela passou a se chamar Viriato Corrêa, uma homenagem ao escritor falecido dois anos antes.
Desde então ela se tornou um importante núcleo de formação de leitores no bairro. Hoje, a biblioteca pública municipal Viriato Corrêa, como é chamada, preserva um acervo de 50 mil exemplares constituído por livros de ficção e informação, revistas, multimídias, entre outros.
Foi na Viriato Corrêa que nasceu, em 1991, a Gibiteca Henfil, responsável por um dos mais importantes acervos de quadrinhos do país. “Ela ocupava metade do prédio. O acervo cresceu e, em 1999, ela foi transferida para o Centro Cultural São Paulo”, diz Sandra.
A grande mudança na Viriato Corrêa veio em 2008, quando ela se tornou uma biblioteca Temática em Literatura Fantástica. “Isso ampliou o acervo e o público. Essa segmentação ocorreu porque já tínhamos aqui uma identidade nerd muito forte”, explica a diretora.
O conceito da biblioteca ampliou nas últimas décadas às demais linguagens. Desde 2008 a Viriato Corrêa é palco da Jornada Noite Adentro, uma maratona de atrações – filmes, jogos, teatro, dança, bate-papo — inspiradas na literatura fantástica.
Sandra destaca que a biblioteca recebe projetos externos como peças, contação de história, palestras, oficinas… “A atividade precisa estar no perfil da Viriato”, diz. A programação, inteiramente gratuita, vai de peças teatrais à oficina de reciclagem (programada para o segundo semestre), de encontros da terceira idade (às quintas) a sessões de cinema. Por mês, o espaço acolhe 3 mil usuários.
Nesses últimos anos a Viriato Corrêa fortaleceu as suas raízes no bairro, afirma a diretora. “Essa conversa com a comunidade é essencial e diária, principalmente com as escolas e ONGS. A missão da biblioteca é a de abrir caminhos em todas as áreas do conhecimento”.
Embora a equipe tenha sido reduzida nos últimos anos, a biblioteca cumpre seu papel com excelência, diz Sandra. “Somos um grupo coeso, que gosta da biblioteca. É preciso sempre ter um olhar carinhoso para a cultura e a educação. Para mim, trabalhar aqui é uma grande realização. Sem educação e cultura o ser humano não evolui”, alerta.
