Francisco Villano (1917- 2019 ) nasceu, cresceu e faleceu na Vila Mariana. Na edição de aniversário do Pedaço da Vila,
ele presenteou a todos contando a história do bairro

Nasci e fui criado em Vila Mariana e durante os meus 86 anos acompanhei a evolução deste bairro. Algumas informações consegui através de leituras; outras, me contaram e, a maioria, vivenciei. Vila Mariana tem História, pois era a região que ligava o centro de São Paulo a Santo Amaro. O bairro era repleto de sítios e chácaras – era o que contavam os antigos moradores.

Pelos anos de 1878, Vila Mariana começa a ser povoada por imigrantes italianos e, com o seu crescimento, outros imigrantes chegaram, como os alemães, na construção da via-férrea, que seria utilizada pelos bondes que ligavam São Paulo a Santo Amaro. A antiga estrada Carril de Ferro (1886) saía da Liberdade até Santo Amaro, passando pela Vila Mariana e a estrada de ferro da Cia. Inglesa, de São Paulo a Santos. Santo Amaro, entre 1885 – 1886, prospera com os imigrantes alemães e a Vila Mariana começa a ter um certo movimento com a chegada do comércio.

O nosso bairro ainda não possuía esse nome. Era conhecido apenas como “vila”, até chegar um cidadão chamado Carlos Eduardo de Paula Petit que deu o nome ao bairro, unindo o nome de sua mãe Ana e o de sua esposa Maria. Em 1887, começa a funcionar no bairro o Matadouro Municipal, que o faz progredir. A população aumenta, as oficinas de Ferro Carril se instalam na rua Domingos de Moraes, como também a fábrica de fósforos e a Escola Pública de Dona Maria Petit, inauguradas na rua Vergueiro.

Porém, o comércio ainda era escasso, obrigando os moradores a irem de bonde até o Mercado Municipal. Esses dados foram obtidos através de pesquisas em livros e, de agora em diante, posso contar os fatos que vivi. Meu pai, de origem italiana, chega como imigrante, em 1909 e, após algumas tentativas com sub empregos, passa a trabalhar com alguns familiares, que já estavam aqui, estabelecidos na rua Humberto I, como vendedor de miúdos de boi, pela facilidade do Matadouro Municipal. Esse comércio era muito lucrativo, o que fez com que muitos italianos se interessassem por essa atividade.

Os italianos que viviam no bairro vieram, na sua maioria, do sul da Itália, das mesmas províncias e, por isso, formavam uma grande família, com laços muito fortes de amizade. Com a chegada de muitos imigrantes o movimento aumentou muito e famílias inteiras vieram habitar as ruas já existentes e outras ruas foram abertas. Fábricas de cerâmica, armazéns, açougues, padarias, floriculturas, quitandas e um hotel, na rua Domingos de Moraes, que ficava próximo à estação Ferro Carril e onde se hospedavam os imigrantes, surgiram. Por volta de 1917, quando nasci (na rua Humberto I), a Vila Mariana já havia se tornado próspera. No Largo da Guanabara, onde hoje é a Estação Paraíso do metrô, havia a igreja de Santa Generosa e a Cervejaria Guanabara, onde trabalhavam muitos alemães, que residiam na rua José Antonio Coelho.

Esses arredores eram repletos de chácaras de verduras e nas imediações da rua Oscar Porto havia um campo de futebol do Clube Guanabara. Na rua Cubatão, localizava-se a metalúrgica “La Fonte” e na Oscar Porto, a fábrica de borracha “Fanabor”. Na av. Paulista, totalmente calçada e repleta de nobres construções, foram construídos o Grupo Escolar Rodrigues Alves, o Hospital Santa Catarina e o Instituto Pasteur (1905). No bairro do Paraíso, estabeleceram-se os sírios e libaneses, perto da atual Catedral Ortodoxa. Com a chegada de tantos imigrantes de várias nacionalidades houve a necessidade de novas escolas para seus filhos que, por não falarem a língua portuguesa, tiveram de contratar professores para ensiná-los na sua língua de origem. Estudei numa dessas escolas, situada na rua Major Maragliano, e que tinha o nome de Professor Francisco Spera.

No ano de 1918, a Gripe Espanhola abateu o bairro e fez várias vítimas, nas quais eu me incluo. Felizmente, foram relatados poucos óbitos. Nossas ruas não eram calçadas, somente a rua Domingos de Moraes, onde as linhas de bonde duplicavam e as casas de negócios cresciam. Por volta de 1915 –1917 chega o abastecimento de água, vinda da Cantareira ou de Cotia para a Caixa D’água da rua Vergueiro, nesse tempo já construída. As industrias aqui estabelecidas entre 1918 e 1920 eram poucas, além da fábrica de fósforos – quase desativada -, havia a fábrica de chocolate e a Cervejaria. Dois curtumes próximos ao matadouro, a fábrica de banha , na rua Pelotas, a fábrica de pasta para calçados “Duas Âncoras”, na França Pinto, a fábrica de pianos Brasil, na rua Estela e a fábrica de sabão da rua França Pinto, movimentavam o bairro.

O comércio concentrava-se próximo à linha de bonde para facilitar o transporte. Muitas lembranças eu tenho da revolução de 1924 – tinha 7 anos -, quando ouvíamos tiroteios esparsos. Nessa época, foi inaugurado o Cine Fênix, na rua Domingos de Moraes, quando seu proprietário foi atingido por uma bala perdida. O acontecimento preocupou os moradores, que preferiram se retirar para outros bairros onde não houvesse objetivos militares. Devido à revolução, as instalações elétricas foram prejudicadas e estavam em reparo e, com isso, aparecem os transportes coletivos. Surgem os carros de aluguel e caminhões, que fizeram com que os moradores próximos às linhas dos bondes, contando com esse novo recurso, procurassem novas moradias longe dos trilhos.

Nessa época, a rua França Pinto, importante artéria, já era totalmente calçada, e por ela circulavam grandes carroções fechados puxados por cavalos, para o transporte da carne vinda do matadouro para os açougues da cidade. Na rua Áurea ficava o campo de futebol do Clube Humberto I, que reunia quase todos os moradores da redondeza. Lá, participei de diversas peladas – meu esporte predileto. De 1930 a 1940, quase todas as ruas principais estavam habitadas e os meios de transporte já as alcançavam. A Light estende sua linha até o Jardim da Saúde e os lugares mais afastados ficam ao alcance de todos.

Graças ao aumento da linha férrea, outros bairros começam a ter afluxo de moradores. Inicia-se, então, a construção do Aeroporto de São Paulo (Congonhas). Na várzea de Santo Amaro, nos campos do Ibirapuera – onde aproveitei toda a minha infância, graças à proximidade de casa – formava-se o bairro com o mesmo nome e, poucos anos depois, a construção do Instituto Biológico. O sistema de iluminação à gás é trocado por lâmpadas elétricas, que substituem os antigos lampiões. Quase todas as ruas, então, são providas de água e esgoto. Com o passar dos anos, meu pequeno bairro fica repleto de melhoramentos: no lugar das casas modestas, grandes edificações.

Transformações materiais tão rápidas que mal consigo acompanhar. A Vila Mariana do tempo de meus pais, onde todos os vizinhos eram como se fossem da mesma família, cresce a cada dia e, hoje, é impossível ter o mesmo relacionamento de antigamente. Citar os nomes das escolas, igrejas, estabelecimentos comerciais, repartições, indústrias, hospitais e prédios antigos já demolidos é praticamente impossível. O importante é contar um pouco da história desse bairro que, com o passar dos anos, poderá se perder. Na memória, tenho boas lembranças. Aqui nasci, cresci, trabalhei, conquistei muitos amigos (muitos já falecidos…) que ajudaram a construir esse bairro de forma simples. Sou o barbeiro de Vila Mariana com muito orgulho e espero ainda contribuir pelos anos que ainda me restam.
